The meaning of wifi6 begins with its definition. Wi-Fi 6, the sixth generation of wireless network technology, is the name of the Wi-Fi standard. Wi-Fi Alliance is a wireless LAN technology created by the IEEE 802.11 standard. Wi-Fi 6 will allow communication with up to eight devices at rates up to 9.6Gbps.
Wi-Fi 6 uses both 2.4GHz and 5GHz wireless frequency bands for data transmission and packs several incremental upgrades over previous Wi-Fi generations, such as OFDMA (orthogonal frequency-division multiple access), an improved version of MU-MIMO, Target Wake Time (TWT) feature for battery saving on mobile and IoT devices, and WPA3 encryption for better security. All these upgrades make Wi-Fi 6 a significant step up and capable of delivering better speeds to connected devices.
Differences between wifi6 and wifi5
Compared with the current common wifi5 technology, wifi6 has better performance in terms of transmission rate, access quantity and energy consumption reduction. In the daily performance test, the transmission data of traditional wifi5 can reach roughly 500mbps, while wifi6 can reach roughly 800mbps, an increase of nearly 50%.
